The 1982 biographical film ‘Gandhi’ is a timeless classic, which depicts the contribution of ‘The Father of our Nation’ in the struggle for Indian independence. The film propagates the message of following a non-violent approach against wrongdoers—the way Mahatma Gandhi passively protested against British Raj. The film also traces Mahatma Gandhi’s efforts to stop the partition of India, and his belief in secularism. Various events of MK Gandhi’s life, where he fought for the rights of oppressed minorities, are also powerfully recreated in ‘Gandhi’. Since the release of this film, several other films have been made on Mahatma Gandhi’s life and on Indian independence.
However, ‘Gandhi’ remains one of the greatest films ever made on the subject. The film is a strong reminder that truth and love can win any war, and that ‘an eye for an eye will only make the whole world blind.’
‘Gandhi’ features British actor Ben Kingsley in the role of Mahatma Gandhi, and was produced and directed by Richard Attenborough. It earned 11 Oscar nominations, out of which it won eight awards, including Best Actor, Best Director and Best Picture. The film also earned a mention in the Guinness Book of World Records for using over 3 lakh extras in Mahatma Gandhi’s funeral scene.
