My Fair Lady
My Fair Lady is an American musical film released in 1964. It is based on a 1913 stage play called ‘Pygmalion’ by George Bernard Shaw. In this movie, Audrey Hepburn plays the role of Eliza Doolittle, who is a poor cockney flower seller. Rex Harrison plays the role of Professor Henry Higgins, who is a phonetics scholar and believes that a person’s prospect in society can be determined by their accent and tone of voice.
Professor Higgins makes a bet with Colonel Hugh Pickering (portrayed by Wilfrid Hyde-White) that he can take a flower girl (Eliza) as his student, refine her skills to transform her into a lady and to deceive the society to accept her as a lady. For this, Pickering offers to fund all expenses if this experiment on Eliza works.
Eliza’s ambition is to work in a flower shop, but her extreme cockney accent poses a tremendous threat to it. One day, Higgins insults Eliza’s English, and she realises that he can teach her to speak well. She arrives at Higgins’s residence to seek his help.
Higgins starts teaching Eliza himself. He uses various methods and works hard to teach her. To test Eliza’s speech, he takes her to Ascot Racecourse, to a ball and so on.
This musical shows the efforts made by Higgins as a teacher and Eliza as a student. It teaches us that having higher expectations from ourselves will help us accomplish more. It also shows the transformational learning process Eliza undergoes. Eliza’s dedication shows us that her ambition helped her learn more. This movie is an all-time must watch movie for all age groups.
