World Migratory Bird Day
World Migratory Bird day is celebrated on the second week in May every year, as an annual awareness-raising campaign highlighting the need for the conservation of migratory birds and their habitats.
The theme that has been decided for the year 2016 is ‘Stop the Illegal Killing, Taking and Trade of Migratory Birds’.
Every year, the migration routes of more than a million birds are shrinking in size due to hyper-development, human intrusion and illegal sale of these birds, thus affecting their chance of survival.
Here are 5 migratory birds -
1. Peregrine Falcon– This is the fastest-flying bird in the world and is known to catch its prey in mid-air. It can dive to speeds of more than 200 mph when hunting. They used to be raised for sports in ancient Egypt, Europe and China.2. Bluethroat– A a very shy and pretty bird, it is known for being vey musical. It can be found hiding in thick vegetation, but is known to be able to live in a variety of climates and habitats.
3. Pacific Golden Plover–Known for breeding in extremely cold places like Siberia and Alaska, these birds are said to be able to run soon after hatching. They fly in great flocks and travel great distances.
4. Wagtails - These birds are tiny, pretty and have cheerful calls. Wagtails roost in large numbers to keep warm and protect each other from predators. They migrate in great flocks and are the earliest to reach India in the winters.
5. Eurasian Wigeon– Their new born ducklings head for water the moment they hatch. They are known to be very sneaky, snatching food from diving ducks and other birds, while out on the water.They are sometimes found on the grass, searching for insects to feed on.
