Dead Poets Society is a book by N. H. Kleinbaum, published on 1st of January 1989. It tells the story of an English teacher who inspires his students through his teaching of poetry.The teaching methods of their new English teacher, John Keating, are unorthodox by the standards of Welton Academy. He tells the students that they may call him "O Captain! My Captain!", in reference to a Walt Whitman poem, if they feel daring. Inspired by Keating, the boys resurrect the Dead Poets Society--a secret club, where, free from the constraints and expectations of school and parents, they let their passions run wild. Sadly, Keating is held responsible for an unfortunate incident that involves one of his students, and is fired from Welton Academy. But towards the end, the boys demonstrate their respect and admiration to Keating in a manner that leaves their headmaster furious and Keating visibly touched.
On 2nd June 1989 an American drama film based on the book was released. Directed by Peter Weir and starring Robin Williams, the film was set at the conservative and aristocratic Welton Academy in Vermont in 1959. The film was critically acclaimed and was nominated for many awards.
