‘Adab, Adab’

‘Adab, Adab’

Whenever anyone asks me what was the best and the worst moments in your life, the answer always zeroes down to the same place. Yes, the best moments in my life were spent in the school. The worst moment in my life was when I had grown up so old that I could no longer go to school. I know normally kids hate school, they get all sorts of ailments and aches only on Monday’s when they have to go back to school after weekend holidays and could not wait to go back to school. School was like my first home, my teachers and friends my family.

My parents always wanted me to be an active student in the school and they encouraged me to participate in all the competitions held in school. And with their strong motivation I was day by day becoming a girl who would raise her hand for any upcoming competitions in the school. I was in class I, when our teacher announced that next week we have a fancy dress completion in our school. Our principal, sister Reenut always motivated the young talent. Full of excitement my mother dressed me up as Anarkali for the competitions. I wore a long floral suit with a feather on my cap. Revising my dialogue for greeting everyone on stage, I was wishing ‘adab, adab’ to everyone I met that morning. As my name was called I went on the stage. Full of confidence and greeted everyone ‘Badam, Badam’ and suddenly I could hear a loud blast of laughter from everyone present in the auditorium. I was shocked and surprised. I went backstage and realized what a blunder I had made. Instead of ‘adab, adab’ I greeted everyone ‘badam, badam’

Although I did not secure any position in the competitions but got a prize for the ‘Most entertaining act of the day’. Whenever I see pictures dressed up as Anarkali, all I am left with is lots of laughter and good memories.
