My Brush with Crush
Once upon a happy carefree time
When I didn’t have to worry about a dime;
I was flying about like a bird
In a joyous children’s world!
I had just turned sweet sixteen;
What an era that had been!
In our class of forty five
There was one boy who would make my heart do the jive!
Every time he passed by my desk
I would feel butterflies in my stomach;
Each time he called my name
I wouldn’t just be the same!
But then I was an ugly duckling
Wearing thick glasses and always flunking;
With nothing much to brag about
In my mind was a constant doubt!
Sad, it was, as neither was I very popular
Nor did anyone find me fantastically jocular;
Scared of being rejected, I just kept quiet
But within me the feelings were causing a riot!
One fine day, he looked at me and smiled
Lo! An emotional volcano erupted and made me go wild;
This, of course, swept me off my feet
For me it was equivalent to achieving a marvellous feat!
Elation started doing lengthy rounds
And my heart started jumping in leaps and bounds!
I sat through the classes with dreamy eyes
And was floating with a feeling of having won a prize!
But just before our farewell, the world slipped from under my feet
I felt all my strength, hopes and energy deplete;
I got to know about his ‘crush’ on my friend
My universe shattered and I sensed ‘The End’!
In spite of that I put up a brave front
And didn’t let anyone hear me sniffle or grunt;
After reaching home, I shut myself in my room
And spent a sleepless night drowning in gloom!
Days went by and it was the eve of my Physics exam
For me it was all Greek and I was struggling to cram;
My dad rushed out and saw me in tears
Little did he know that it wasn’t due to exam fears!
Even today, the thought brings a grin on my face
I allow it to linger and relish till it stays;
Now I’m wishing for a time machine to take me back to school
And relive the best phase of my life which was just supercool!!
