The rising invasion of technology has inspired Narayanan Ramkrishnan to make something for people suffering with autism. A team comprising of software engineers, software testers, product specialist, customer excellence team and marketing team collectively made the app called ‘Avaz’.
Avaz app is a picture and text-based communication app to help people with autism to communicate about their needs and express their feelings.
It currently offers three-graded research-based vocabulary sets with over 5000 core and secondary words prearranged into categories.
The Avaz team developed a prototype of its first version along with Vidyasagar, a Tamil Nadu based social organisation that runs several programmes for the differently-abled.
In order to reach out to autistic people and their parents, the team collaborated with Tamil Nadu government for the implementation of technology exercises for children with special needs.
The use of this app has helped remarkably to reduce child’s frustration, has increased the communication, reduced behavioural issues, increased self-esteem, confidence, and access to education.
The Avaz app has launched FreeSpeech, a novel picture-based communication system that has applications in language teaching and special education. FreeSpeech also helps the therapists to know what level the child has reached as it offers analytics at a granular level.
Currently the app is available in ten languages and is used by autistic individuals in more than 20 countries.
