Digital blackboards launched for nine lakh classrooms in India

 - 26 February, 2019

The Human Resource Development Ministry launched Operation Digital Blackboard with the aim to facilitate nine lakh classrooms in schools and colleges across the country with digital facilities for teaching by 2022.

To analyse the need and availability of digital blackboards, a committee has been formed under Prof. Ashok Jhunjhunwala of IIT Madras to find solutions. The committee has estimated the need of seven lakhs digital blackboards for classes 9 to 12 and two lakhs for classes in higher education institutions.
By 2022, the government will work towards providing facilities of digital boards to all these classes.
In the initial phase, schools will be equipped with smart boards which will have the provision to directly connect to internet, television and show e-books.
The central and state governments will merge with municipal bodies, take help from corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities and public participation to generate funds for it.
In India, there are about 14 lakh untrained teachers and the government has decided to train them by 31 March, 2019, by amending the Right to Education Act. After the teacher training process is over, the services of untrained teachers will be suspended.
