IIT Kharagpur students develop mobile app to detect fake notes

Students from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur have formulated unique solutions ranging from detecting counterfeit currency to nuclear radiation tracking trough wearable sensors, at the recently held nationwide competition ‘Smart India Hackathon 2019’.A group of six students from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at IIT Kharagpur have developed a code for a smart phone application to address the problem of detecting fake Indian currency.
A user can upload the image of a currency note and the mobile app would verify its authenticity using 25 features extracted from the front and rear side of the currency note.
In another innovative project, students also addressed the hazards of people working in the domain of a nuclear-powered device. The wearable sensors will help the workers detect the location of radiation leaks in nuclear plants and refineries.
The solution can also find application in medical radiation therapy or radio therapy as part of cancer treatment, to control or kill malignant cancer cells.
The students won some of the top prizes in the grand finale of Smart India Hackathon 2019 held at IIT KGP.
