Kenyan science teacher wins 2019 Global Teacher Prize

Peter Tabichi, a science teacher from rural Kenya is the winner of the 2019 Global Teacher Prize, awarded by the Varkey Foundation. Peter Tabichi is a maths and physics teacher who donates most of his salary to help poor students. He received the award with 1 million US dollars cash prize, at an ceremony in Dubai.
Tabichi teaches science in the semi-arid region of Pwani village, where almost a third of children are orphans or have only one parent. Drought and famine are common in that region.
He is a member of the Franciscan religious order and gives away 80% of income to help the poorest students at the poorly equipped and overcrowded school. Tabichi and four colleagues also give struggling pupils one-to-one tuition in maths and science, visit students’ home and talk to parents to identify the problem.
The ‘Global Teacher Prize’ has become one of the most sought-after and prestigious awards for teachers. The winner is selected by committees comprising of teachers, journalists, officials, entrepreneurs, business leaders and scientists.
