Healthy lifestyle for teachers

Lifestyle is a term that refers to the way people live in their day-to-day lives, their activities, habits, values and attitude. It includes food choices, sleeping patterns, resting, physical activities and exercise, immunisation and coping with stress among others.

There is a strong relationship between lifestyle and health. Both are proportional to each other. The type of lifestyle one leads, affects their health. If a decent lifestyle promotes good health, an inappropriate lifestyle causes chronic diseases.

A teacher’s profession involves a lot of hard work. Most of their days require high amount of energy, pre-preparation for all their classes, patience and robustness. Though working hours end depending on the school schedule, their work does not. Preparation for the next day’s class, corrections of note books and answer scripts, occasionally organising for an event or function in school and work back home, are constant.

This regime eventually takes a toll on their health. Like in any profession, healthy body and mind promotes better job productivity. To maintain high energy levels throughout the day cannot be possible if a good lifestyle is not led.

Tips to promote a healthy body, mind and soul

  1. Relax for a few minutes every time, before entering a class. It helps to focus better and visualise the flow of the lesson plan during the class.
  2. Try to eat a fruit or a high nutrition snack during short breaks. It benefits in building and sustaining energy throughout the day.
  3. Start and end the day with a few stretching and breathing exercises to relax the mind and muscles.
