A Little Girl

You came to me as a child
Untouched by worldly ways
You reached just my knees
A blank look, no care
I still remember t’was that day
You walked in an uneasy gait
Tears rolling down your face
Your willful spirit slipped away
Neither smiled nor swayed
To the music I played
 Left the home where
You were known and loved
You came to my world
A little girl you came my way

I felt sad, I felt helpless
In the corner you stood alone
No joy, no happiness
I sang a song but to no avail
For my mind was with you
I reasoned it out
Patience and faith I sought
I knew each child is unique
Some can’t walk, some can’t talk
But you were special
I always had a smile for you
Encouraged you
Boosted your spirits
With little jokes and small play
A little girl came my way

Time passed, days went by
And then one fine day
You smiled, a pretty smile
That was the day I knew
I had won the game
Your mom was ecstatic
It was day to celebrate
There was a spring in your step
The sun was up again
The fun was here to stay
A little girl came my way

Many seasons went by
With memories by my side
Till one day you came
My sagging spirits, my aging bones
You a spirited girl, a girl of fast paced tones
Waiting to fly away to foreign shores
You thanked me for holding your little hand
And opening the world’s doors
You made it big, made me proud
A star shining in true light
Farewell to thee from a teacher
Who played a role, a small role nevertheless
In the journey of your life
A little girl you came my way.
