Human Right’s Day is commemorated on the 10 of December every year to celebrate the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights is known to be one of the major achievements as well as the first enunciation of human rights around the world. The day is marked with high-level political conferences, meetings and other cultural events that deal with the issue of Human Rights. Several governmental and non-governmental agencies schedule special events on this day for social and civil causes.History
The formal inception of the Human Rights Day dates back to the year 1950 after the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution to all the states who were interested in adopting 10 December every year as Human Rights Day. Roughly over 48 states voted in favor of the resolution after which the General Assembly adopted a Declaration which ranged over political, economic, civic, social and cultural issues.
The Declaration drafted by representatives from diverse legal and cultural backgrounds around the world set out a common standard of achievement for all peoples and nations. It focused on individual dignity and helped uplift the dignity of millions. Ever since, several countries joined the cause to celebrate Human Rights annually and inspired more than 60 human rights instruments to constitute together the international standard of human rights.

Human Rights Day is celebrated every year with a theme kept in mind to address issues that are faced by mankind throughout. The 2018 commemoration of the Human Rights Day will mark a year-long celebration of 70 years since the international committee adopted the Declaration. This year’s Human Rights Day will advocate for everyone to stand up for his or her civil, economic, political and cultural rights. Additionally, the day will also aim to enlighten us on how rights form the foundation of sustainable development.
