Baking Soda Volcano

Baking Soda Volcano

Things Needed:
  • Vinegar
  • Water
  • Baking soda
  • Dishwashing liquid
  • Two containers
Directions:
  1. Take 1/3 cup of water in a container. Add 4 teaspoons of baking soda and 2 teaspoons of dishwashing liquid into it.
Do not stir.
  1. In the other container, add 15 teaspoons of vinegar.
  2. Place the container containing the mixture of water, baking soda and dishwashing liquid on a table. Pour vinegar into the container.
  3. Once the vinegar is poured into the container, it reacts with the baking soda.
How does it work?
This experiment helps to understand the reaction between an acid and a base. When vinegar (acid) is added to baking soda (base), it results in the formation of salt (sodium acetate), water and carbon dioxide. The carbon dioxide forces the contents in the container to move out, resulting in an eruption.
